Established in 1996, the Tourism Development Committee communicates GEDA's recognition of tourism as an important part of economic development in Georgia. This committee has worked to establish GEDA communications and partnerships with other organizations having an interest in tourism. The committee develops recommendations for GEDA relative to support of economic development practitioners engaged in tourism development projects, such as practical skills training for economic development practitioners on the recruitment and location of tourism facilities and attractions. In 2001, GEDA co-sponsored the first "Georgia Travel Trends" conference.

2009-2010 Action Plan
Action Items:
- Increase Georgia’s new tourism product by engaging more communities in tourism product development efforts
- Plan one monthly meeting that brings in a dynamic speaker to focus on a community that has successfully implemented tourism product development (TPD) and seen it revolutionize their community. Consider also adding TPD-related sessions to Spring Workshop and Annual Meeting
- Develop a tourism product development “toolkit” for communities that provides access to resources, overviews successful case studies, and provides ideas for communities. Post it online at the GEDA website
Tourism, the world’s largest industry, is essential to a community’s economic vitality, sustainability, and profitability. In Georgia, tourism is the state’s second largest industry and an economic generator for communities in every corner of our great state. Many communities would like to better tap the potential business that tourism represents, but are not sure where to begin. That’s where the publication below can help!
The Heritage Tourism Handbook: A How-To Guide for Georgia, while focused on developing heritage tourism, provides a great roadmap to any kind of tourism product development. Beyond this guide, you are welcome to reach out to any member of GEDA’s tourism committee or to GDEcD’s Product Development Team for assistance. We would welcome the opportunity to connect you with a number of resources that are available to assist communities with tourism product development.
