GEDA Summer Events

Posted By: Pat Merritt GEDA News,

I can think of no better way to start off this monthly column than by thanking Sean McMillan and his team of volunteers for organizing a wonderful Spring Workshop!  Kudos to Sean for giving us a fun and exciting conference at Callaway Gardens.  We are very thankful and lucky to have Sean in our leadership rotation, and we are excited to see what he has in store for us in the future.

As many of you know, GEDA will not meet in June or July.  That said, there are plenty of ways to stay involved with peers in your region.  Plan to attend one of the following sessions in your respective region…

  • Tuesday, July 23, Region 9 Gathering, The Big House, 10:30 AM-1:30 PM, hosted by Andrea Taylor, Executive Director, Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Chamber & JDA. Register by contacting Andrea, ataylor@jeffdavisjda.com.

  • Wednesday, August 28, Coastal Georgia Good News Gathering, Coastal Regional Commission, 11 AM-1:30 PM, hosted by Jason Coley, Community Development Manager, Georgia Power, and sponsors. Register by contacting Jason, JFColey@SouthernCo.com.

If you do not see your region in the notes above, fear not!  Many economic development professionals host get-togethers with their regional peers, or some regions have informal meet-ups to stay in touch during the summer.  Reach out to your Joint Development Authority members, Regional Commissions, GDEcD Regional Project Managers, and/or ECG, Georgia EMC, Georgia Power or TVA Community Development Managers and ask them if they would be interested in coordinating a regional summit.

GEDA will resume its monthly meeting schedule on Monday, August 19, as we visit the City of Columbus for an exciting session focusing on Non-Traditional Economic Development.  Not only will the session give participants insight into Columbus’ public/private partnership to building its Uptown district, but there are also three optional activities for people to enjoy when they visit this Amazing City:

  • Whitewater Adventure - USA Today calls the whitewater trail in Columbus, GA one of the “TOP 12 MAN MADE ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD.”  We've partnered with Whitewater Express to offer GEDA attendees the signature Columbus, GA experience, rafting the world-class whitewater trail in the Chattahoochee River along Columbus’s beautiful waterfront. Participants will meet at Whitewater Express for orientation and gear.

  • Zip-Line Adventure - Crossing the Chattahoochee River TWICE, zippers will experience the only dual-zip lines that connect two states while reaching speeds up to 40mph! Blue Heron Aerial Course, a treetop obstacle experience will meet you in Phenix City, Alabama with a total of 10 obstacles. The excitement continues as you enter the TREETOP ZIP COURSE and finish by zipping back to our outpost where the adventure began!

  • Uptown Columbus Adventure - You'll meet the staff of Uptown Columbus. Uptown Columbus, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that facilitates and coordinates economic revitalization initiatives throughout the Central Business District, Riverfront and throughout Uptown. Over the past 25 years Uptown has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Tour will end at the Cannon Brewpub with a crafted cold beverage. Attendees will have a choice of a local handcrafted beer, root beer, or ginger ale.

As always, thank you for making GEDA a wonderful organization with a tremendous impact on the issues that matter to our state.  GEDA is known as one of the best economic development organizations in the United States, and that is thanks to you.

On behalf of the GEDA membership, its board, and its staff, I wish you a very safe and happy summer.
