Overview. The Waycross-Ware Development Authority, located in Waycross, Georgia, is seeking candidates for president and chief executive officer of the economic development organization. The Chason Group has been retained by the authority to lead the executive search.

About the Development Authority. The Waycross-Ware Development Authority members are appointed by the Waycross Mayor / City Council and the Ware County Board of Commissioners. The charge to the members is to be aggressive in the search for new businesses to locate in the community and develop strong relationships with existing businesses. Developing a strategic plan that matches the goals of the  community in terms of economic development is also a part of the development authority’s role. Financially, the City of Waycross and Ware County have committed to funding for the development authority in order to grow the local economy. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds have been collected and are available for infrastructure improvements to various industrial sites.

About the Community.  Waycross is approximately one hour from Georgia’s Golden Isles and approximately one hour from the Jacksonville, FL International Airport (JAX). The city is a key railroad junction for the movement of products throughout the southeastern United States. Lines from six directions meet in the city. Waycross gained its name from the strategic position it holds for the rail lines - where the “ways cross.”

Transportation. Waycross and Ware County have grown thanks to a transportation infrastructure that provides easy access to three major ports (Savannah, Brunswick, and Jacksonville). The CSX Transportation Rice Yard is the largest of nine classification yards operated by the rail company and the largest east of the Mississippi. The Ware County Airport is operated by the county government and showcases three runways: 6,000 feet, 5,035 feet, and 3,528 feet. US Highways 1, 82, and 84 provide four lane access to interstates 10, 75, and 95 in less
than an hour.

The Position. The president and chief executive officer is responsible for directing and facilitating inclusive and strategic economic development initiatives to grow and maintain jobs and increase the tax base of Waycross and Ware County. The professional is accountable for both commercial and industrial recruitment and maintenance. Other responsibilities include: providing leadership and guidance to the WWDA staff and board of directors; oversight of all daily operations; and, in collaboration with the community, developing and implementing a strategic plan on an annual basis. The president represents the authority at meetings with clients, working with funding partners and the media.

Key Attributes. The leaders of the economic development organization are seeking traditional and non-traditional candidates who have  experience in the areas of economic development, community development, real estate, business, marketing and/or public relations. Other attributes the development authority is looking for in candidates include a strong financial and budgeting background as well as being a highly organized self-starter with the ability to work in structured or unstructured environments. Applicants must have a proven track record of building relationships with clients and stakeholders. Knowledge and experience in all aspects of grants used for economic development and land development / management are skill sets important for candidates.

Requirements. Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience; three years
of executive management leadership experience in the business, economic development and/or community development field, chamber of
commerce, association, or a combination of these; and a proven tenure in leading an organization through visionary growth and meaningful change to improve the business environment of the community.
