Athens. (April 2023 Chair's Column)

Posted By: Benjy Thompson GEDA News,

April in Georgia turns everyone’s mind to the east Georgia city that hosts thousands every year among its flowers, trees, and hills. Not Augusta – Athens! At least that’s the case for our GEDA family this year.  Several years ago, the GEDA Board of Directors considered new locations for our annual Spring Workshop.  Surveys were sent, discussions were had, and a decision was made – to hold the event at the home of the University of Georgia in 2023. I’ve talked to a great number of you who are very excited to be in Athens for this year’s event.  Stacy Watson, our Secretary-Treasurer and coordinator of Spring Workshop, has put together a great agenda for us.

Athens reminds me of another event that occurs there regularly – the Biennial Institute for Georgia legislators, an important kickoff for our State’s elected representatives before the Legislature’s two year session.  This year, GEDA increased our focus on legislative activities to better serve our members and our elected officials.  Grant, our Public Policy group, and other GEDA members did a great job representing all of us in discussions about legislation that would affect economic development.  Thanks to all who were actively involved with these issues this year.

Our GEDA membership is large and diverse, and we may have differing opinions about some of the legislation that is offered each year.  However, we all have one thing in common – the work that we do to help our State’s citizens have better opportunities for the future.  We hope you all will continue to participate in GEDA’s efforts – on the legislative front, at our Spring Workshop, and throughout the year.

See you all soon in Athens.
